As previously indicated, the RDS has revised its Master of Arts (MA) programs, effective July 1, 2021. These programs consist of the MA: Religion program and the MA: Near Eastern Archaeology (NEA) program.
Previously, the MA: Religion program required (A) as few as 48 quarter units of specific, 4-unit courses for students with an undergraduate degree in religious studies or equivalent and (B) as many as 72 units for those with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines. The new, Regular program requires 60 units for those in category B. Those in category A may continue to qualify for the new, Advanced Standing program that can require as few as 48 units. However, the main changes in the MA: Religion program are (1) that, except in special, approved cases, the curriculum has shifted from a primary emphasis/secondary emphasis (major/minor) model to a broad, comprehensive program in religious studies; and (2) that students must successfully complete either a thesis or a comprehensive examination–they may also choose to do both.
Previously, the MA: NEA required 48 quarter units of courses. The new, Regular program requires 56 units. Students who have completed sufficient undergraduate or graduate courses in archaeology may qualify for Advanced Standing and be able to complete the program in as few as 48 units.
You will find details of the new, Regular MA programs in the 2021-2022 Graduate Bulletin here, starting on p. 169. Prospective students who feel they may qualify for the new, Advanced Standing MA: Religion program, may email me for a review of their credentials. Prospective MA: NEA students may email Dr. Kent Bramlett. Although, students who start these MA programs this year will automatically fall under the provisions of these revised programs, current students may request transfer to the jurisdiction of the new bulletin.
